ERP integration connects a financial product with the accounting data, records, and workflows inside an enterprise resource planning system. For banks and fintechs, the phrase can describe three materially different products: an accounting API, a bank feed, or an application that runs inside the ERP.

Confusing those methods makes vendor comparisons nearly useless. A provider can claim NetSuite support when it only reads a few objects. Another can deliver transaction feeds but cannot write bills or payment status. A third may build an ERP-native experience that keeps the user inside NetSuite or Dynamics. All three are integrations. They solve different problems.

The three ERP integration methods

  • Accounting or ERP API: The user works in the bank or fintech product. Data usually moves in both directions, making this method useful for lending, expense management, bill pay, invoicing, and analytics.
  • Bank feeds: The user works in the ERP's reconciliation module. Transactions move from the bank or fintech into the ERP for delivery and reconciliation.
  • Fully embedded application: The user works inside the ERP. A bidirectional workflow can support payments, treasury, AP, FX, and reconciliation.

Rutter's existing guide to ERP integration methods maps these models across customer segments and supported systems. The right choice begins with two questions: where does the customer do the work, and what needs to move between systems?

Accounting API integration

An accounting API gives a bank or fintech normalized access to ERP and accounting data. The product owns the customer interface, while the API translates requests into each platform's objects and schemas.

Read workflows may pull invoices, bills, vendors, accounts, financial statements, or general-ledger activity. Write workflows may create bills, post expenses, record payments, or update invoice state. Rutter's Accounting API supports bidirectional sync through one data model and provides access to platform-specific fields when a normalized schema is not enough.

API integration is a good fit when customers already prefer the bank or fintech application. An underwriting product, for example, needs financial data but does not need to appear inside the ERP. An expense product may own the user experience and write approved activity back to the books.

Normalization reduces repeated engineering work, but it cannot erase the differences among ERPs. Custom fields, subsidiaries, dimensions, tax behavior, and authentication still vary. Product teams should ask how the provider exposes platform-specific data and how it reports partial or failed writes.

Bank feeds integration

Bank feeds move transaction data from a bank, card issuer, or fintech into an accounting system. The finance team then matches those transactions against its records inside the ERP.

Direction matters. A typical bank feed does not give the bank broad read and write access to the customer's ledger. It solves a narrower job: delivering clean transaction data into the reconciliation surface. Bank feeds are often the right starting point for SMB customers. They remove CSV exports and manual uploads without asking the customer to adopt a new finance workflow. They are less suitable when the product needs to initiate payments, manage approvals, or interact with detailed ERP records.

Fully embedded ERP integration

A fully embedded integration places the financial product inside the ERP's interface and operating context. Users may view balances, select bills, approve payments, execute FX, or resolve reconciliation exceptions without opening a separate portal.

ERP-native delivery is most useful for mid-market and enterprise customers who coordinate finance work inside systems such as NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, SAP, or Workday. Product teams evaluating that route should also map the full embedded payment workflow, including approval, execution, writeback, and reconciliation.

Implementation is deeper than an API connection. Each ERP has its own extension model, certification process, permissions, upgrade behavior, and customer configuration. Microsoft, for example, validates Business Central extensions against technical and marketplace requirements through its extension validation process.

Choose by workflow, not by integration count

Integration counts are easy to publish and hard to interpret. Buyers need a coverage matrix that names the ERP, method, supported objects, available actions, and production status.

Consider a bank building an accounts-payable product. SMB customers may use the bank's application and rely on the Accounting API for bill data and writeback. Bank feeds can return settled transactions for reconciliation. Larger customers may need payment preparation and approval inside the ERP itself. One product can require all three methods as its customer base matures.

Questions to ask an ERP integration provider

Ask for a workflow demonstration on the exact ERP your customer uses. Confirm which objects can be read, created, updated, and deleted. Review authentication, custom-field access, webhook delivery, idempotency, retry behavior, rate limits, and audit history. Then ask who handles marketplace approval and version changes.

Coverage should also be described honestly. "Supports Dynamics" is incomplete because Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics 365 Finance have different models and extension paths. "Supports SAP" needs similar qualification. Named platforms and named workflows are more useful than a large logo wall.

One product may need more than one method

ERP integration is not a single architectural choice. It is a set of ways to connect a financial product with the systems where customers keep records and make decisions.

Use an Accounting API when the product owns the interface. Use bank feeds when transactions need to reach the ERP for reconciliation. Use an embedded application when the customer expects to complete the workflow inside the ERP. Banks and fintechs that serve several customer segments often need a combination, connected through infrastructure their teams can monitor and maintain.
